Overhanging trees on Mayo's R312 a major issue
THE issue of overhanging trees on the R312 Belmullet road has again been aired by Councillor Gerry Coyle.
His colleagues agree that the tops of trees need cutting as they have become top-heavy.
There are lots of discussions about speed limits and road safety, yet on this route he sees trees and bushes overhanging the road, waiting to come down on top of some car.
They should be cut back away from the roads and power lines, said Councillor Coyle, who declared it was 'lunacy'.
Councillor Chris Maxwell said a tree shears is fast and efficient and could sort many miles of roads in cutting back trees, and get it done once and for all.
The R312 has a canopy formed from both sides of the road, noted Councillor Sean Carey, where previously there were issues with mirrors on buses and lorries getting broke. The side hedging was done, but not up higher.
The tops need to be taken off, agreed Councillor Johnny O'Malley, as they are making the roads dangerous.
Members were told their concerns will be brought to the roads section, but were reminded that trees are the responsibility of land owners to maintain.
