Old Mayo street is rejuvenated, much to the joy of locals
An old street in Castlebar has been rejuvenated after years of concern over its rundown condition.
Brett's Lane at Newtown is now properly surfaced with a tarmacadam finish, giving it a new lease of life.
However, it is likely to become a one-way route in the near future to prevent it being used as 'a rat run' by impatient motorists held up at the busy Newtown traffic lights.
Located directly across from the Castlebar College of Further Education, it became known as Brett's Lane because Brett Painters had a storage shed located there for many decades.
At the end of the lane was a rickety wooden bridge over the river and beside it was an outflow pipe from the old Hat Factory which deposited different coloured dyes into the stream.
Now the entire area is cleared up and there is a direct pedestrian access to the Castlebar Riverside Walk.
