Mayo set for blast of Arctic ice over the weekend

Weather warnings look set to come into place as Mayo braces for a freeze.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 3

Any frost and fog will clear in the morning leaving another cold and bright day tomorrow with sunny spells.

It will be largely dry again in many areas apart from a few isolated showers, with the odd wintry one.

Highs of 4 to 6 degrees in mostly light to moderate westerly or variable breezes.

Very cold with some very disruptive and impactful weather likely this weekend, with an area of low pressure dominating and bringing heavy rain, sleet and some disruptive amounts of snow.

Becoming blustery too. Becoming drier for the early days of next week with the winds moderating, but bitterly cold with an arctic airmass across the country and with very hazardous conditions from a combination of lying snow, widespread severe frost and ice and scattered wintry showers.

FRIDAY NIGHT

Staying cold and mainly dry with clear spells. There'll be a few well scattered showers near western and northern coasts, the odd wintry one.

Lowest temperatures of -3 to +1 degrees, with widespread frost and some ice forming once again.

There'll be also be some fog and freezing fog patches.
