Weekend of weather warnings ahead of schools returning
Mayo and much of Ireland braces for freezing temperatures.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 4
Mostly dry to start tomorrow with some clear spells.
It will get cloudier as the day progresses as a band of persistent and possibly heavy rain spreads from the south during the afternoon, turning to sleet and snow.
Winds will be mostly light easterly to begin, but will freshen through the day.
Still very cold, with highs of just 1 to 3 degrees.
NATIONAL OUTLOOK
Continuing cold this weekend with further falls of rain, sleet and snow, alongside icy conditions. Becoming very cold as we move into next week with mostly dry conditions apart from wintry showers in the north and west.
SATURDAY NIGHT
A wet and cold night Saturday night with widespread heavy falls of rain, sleet and snow.
The precipitation will mainly fall as sleet and snow away from the south and southwest, with some accumulations expected.
Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees in moderate to fresh and gusty east to northeast winds, stronger in some coastal parts.
