Are Mayo householders facing a local property tax increase in 2025?

An increase in local property tax in Mayo is under consideration, according to media reports.

Thousands of private homeowners throughout the country are already facing a hike in their local property tax this year after six local authorities voted to introduce higher charges.

Householders in Cork, Westmeath, Tipperary and Galway will be affected, with councils saying the extra income will go towards footpath repairs, public lighting, traffic management and community facilities.

Out of the 31 local authorities, 18 are charging the maximum increase available, The Irish Independent reports today.

Every local authority can increase or decrease the local property tax (LPT) by up to 15pc from the basic rate each year.

This is known as the local adjustment factor.

The variation rate currently stands at 10 per cent in Mayo, one of the lowest in the country.

Elected member of Mayo County Council voted to retain the existing rate last September.

The decision was taken despite the fact the head of finance Peter Duggan has recommended the base rate to be increased to 15% - in line with other local authorities - in order to take in an additional €1.4 million in income to help cover matching funding for capital projects.

Pressure will continue to come on councillors to consider the increase as 10 elected members have already expressed their support for it.
