Mayo Mountain Rescue assist walkers who took wrong turn
TWO walkers who took a wrong turn in the Wild Nephin National Park were safely located by Mayo Mountain Rescue team yesterday evening.
This was Mayo Mountain Rescue's first call-out of 2025, with the call for assistance coming at 5.45 p.m.
Two walkers on the Letterkeen trail, in Wild Nephin National Park, took a wrong turn and headed up towards Nephin Beg mountain.
Realising it was getting dark, they wisely dialled 999 and requested Mountain Rescue assistance.
In an update on their social media, Mayo Mountain Rescue explained how they were able to locate the walkers with phonefind technology and then guided them to the Lough Aroher hut.
As it was dark, and they had no lights, the walkers were advised to wait there. A first response team then drove up on the rough forest trail and located the couple.
“Very tired and cold, they were glad of some warm drinks and transport back to the Letterkeen carpark, somewhat wiser from their adventure,” the volunteer team reported.
