Good news on stalled revival of much-loved Mayo lakeside hotel

The long-derelict site of the former Healy’s Hotel in Pontoon is finally set to see construction resume early next year, The Connaught Telegraph can exclusively reveal.
Local Councillor Harry Barrett has described the site as an “eyesore for too long” and called for urgent progress to restore one of Mayo’s most scenic tourism destinations.
Part-owner John Reddington, a Bohola native now based in the UK, confirmed that he hopes to restart construction in early 2026 after a series of setbacks stalled development.
“We began construction in 2019. Then Covid hit and we had to stop,” Reddington explained.
“What followed were two of the hardest years of my career. Inflation scuppered the lot - it was so tough here in the UK from 2022 to 2023. But I have every intention of getting the project back on track.”
Spiralling costs and inflation post-lockdown saw many construction firms feel the pinch but Reddington has bounced back and confirmed that the “millions already poured into the site” will mean there will be a date for construction in 2026. “It’ll be a boutique establishment.”
As per planning, the site is slated for 14 guest bedrooms.
Reddington, who moved to England at the age of 15, revealed that 2022 and 2023 were among the most challenging years in the 27-year history of his business, with losses totalling £83 million.
Despite this, he remains committed to completing the long-awaited development in Pontoon.
“It’ll provide a great boost to tourism and employment in the area, that’s the main drive.”
Independent Councillor Harry Barrett spoke about the urgent need for progress.
“This is one of the most scenic areas in the county - if not the country. Pontoon was once renowned for tourism, and the negative impact of having two hotels out of action, at a time when Mayo’s hospitality industry is crying out for beds, has gone on too long.”
While wishing the development every success, Barrett acknowledged that frustration remains among local residents who pass by the site daily and recall the glory days of Healy’s Hotel.
A former historic site, it was a favourite among generations of locals and visiting anglers over many years.
