"Their latest ESB bills had doubled because they were using an electric fire."

Elderly Mayo people 'freezing in their homes'

by Auld Stock

This country has experienced some very harsh weather, frost, snow, wind and rain, over the past few days and weeks.

In a number of homes I have visited in Castlebar, elderly people were huddled together to keep themselves warm.

Their latest ESB bills had doubled because they were using an electric fire.

They had cut down on the use of the fire because of increased costs.

The ESB does an excellent job; it is our government that determines the price of electricity.

Meanwhile elderly people, those who built up this little country in bad times, continue to freeze in their homes.

This is not right.

In fact it is a downright shame.
