Way cleared for proposed new Mayo poultry house

AN Bord Pleanála has cleared the way for the construction of a poultry house in Aughamore.

The unit will accommodate 20,000 chickens and will be used for the free range production of eggs.

DN Farm Limited are behind the project, to be located at Doogary, Aughamore, Ballyhaunis.

There was objection to the proposed development, which was the subject of an appeal after Mayo County Council granted planning permission.

Four third party submissions to the council raised concerns about noise and light pollution, environmental impact, waste water impact (on River Moy), animal welfare, public health, devaluation of property, traffic impact, odour and vermin.

An inspector with An Bord Pleanála, in an extensive report, recommended that planning be refused. However, the board did not agree with that finding and granted permission.

In its order, the board said that subject to compliance with a number of conditions, the development would not seriously injure the amenities of the area or result in the creation of a traffic hazard and was in accordance with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.

It would not be likely to have an adverse effect on any designated European sites, the order added.
