Fundraiser for Mayo man injured in fall reaches €100,000
AN online fundraiser for a Mayo man who suffered injuries in a fall in Australia on Christmas Day has passed its initial €100,000 target.
There has been a massive outpouring of support for Cathal Canavan, who is a well-known figure in local sporting circles. He played all his underage football, up to minor level, with Claremorris GAA Club.
Following the life-threatening accident, Cathal received treatment in ICU in Sydney. Although a challenging and long road lies ahead, his family and friends are hopeful for his full recovery.
Friends rallied to support him and his family by launching the iDonate fundraiser to meet the costs of Cathal's medical care and rehabilitation and to also support his parents Shane and Josie and his brother, Kieran, to ensure they can stay close by his side in Sydney.
The donation page said: 'As those who know him well would tell you, Cathal is an extremely kind-hearted individual. Fiercely loyal, he protects those close to him, and you know that he is always in your corner whenever you need.
'He is hardworking in his trade as a plumber and his mischievous laugh and smile are infectious.
'Every donation, no matter how small, is extremely appreciated. We understand that not everyone is in the position to donate so even by sharing this with others to help spread the word would mean a lot.'
As of this morning, €100,950 has been raised to support Cathal and his family.
