Teenage victim of Achill road crash is named locally

A teenager who died in a road traffic collision on Achill Island in the early hours of this morning has been described in online tributes as “a wonderful young person."

He is named locally as Luca Callaghan (17), Owenduff, Achill.

He is survived by his heartbroken parents, Darren and Fidelma, his brother Ciaran, Cody, Rhys and Dean and his grandmother Phyllis Moran as well as other close relatives.

Funeral arrangements for Luca, who lost his life on the R319 road near Keel shortly before 1 a.m. today (Monday), have not yet been finalised.

The deceased was the sole occupant of the crash vehicle.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses and for anyone with video or dash cam footage to contact Westport Garda Station or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
