Mayo council meeting adjourned as mark of respect to bereaved families
THE monthly meeting of Mayo County Council was adjourned yesterday (Monday) for 15 minutes as a mark of respect following a number of bereavements in the county.
Sympathy was extended to families who have lost loved ones recently, including Councillor Ger Deere, on the death of his sister Celia; Councillor Harry Barrett, on the death of his father, Harry snr, who lived in Belmullet; Councillor Neil Cruise, on the death of his mother-in-law, Grace Kelly; the Swanick family on the death of Bernie Condron (mother of Aislinn Swanick, son-in-law Keith); and Teresa O'Malley on the passing of her mother, Mary.
Also remembered were the Cryan and Loftus families on the death of Róisín Loftus, and the Achill family who lost their son, Luca Callaghan (17), in a road traffic accident yesterday morning.
On the tragic death of Róisín Cryan, Councillor Michael Loftus, a cousin of her fiance Conor Loftus, said there were so many people to thank who had come out to offer support, from assisting with the search, to making food, or sending messages from near and far. They included his team-mates from Crossmolina GAA Club and the Mayo senior team and officials.
Councillor Loftus added his condolences to that of his colleagues to the Achill family and community on the loss of a young man who was just beginning his life.
