Mayo architects at the forefront of innovative design practice
A new 12-bedroom, four-star boutique hotel extension at The Red Bank Restaurant, in the heart of Carrick-on-Shannon, has successfully navigated the planning process.
The contemporary extension has been meticulously designed to complement the original Victorian redbrick building, ensuring a seamless blend of heritage and modern luxury.
This project aims to enhance Carrick-on-Shannon’s growing appeal as a must-visit destination within Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands and the Wild Atlantic Way. Each bedroom has been thoughtfully curated to provide an elegant and comfortable experience for visitors.
A standout feature of the project is its use of Design for Disassembly (DfD) principles, a pioneering approach in the Irish construction industry. This method ensures that materials can be reused, recycled, or reclaimed, directly addressing Ireland’s most significant waste challenge—construction and demolition waste, which constitutes the country's largest waste stream.
Kevin Loftus, lead design architect for Accelerating Change Together, emphasised the importance of this approach: "DfD allowed us to create a detailed deconstruction plan, reflecting our client’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
By focusing on circularity in construction materials, we tackled a crucial environmental issue. Combined with our Green Transition Design Thinking approach, this process helped us secure planning permission seamlessly, without further information requests."
