Mayo arts centre to invigorate audiences this January
THE Linenhall’s marvellous events slate for 2025 commences with experiences in the realm of comedy, film and performance.
Drop, a visual arts exhibition by artist Brían Crotty, launches in the Linenhall gallery this Friday, January 17, at 5 p.m.
Drop revolves around merging painting and cinema, meticulously exploring the temporal aspects of both mediums through hybridisation by intertwining elements of painting, animation, AI generation, and performance. Crotty endeavours to present fresh perspectives, provocations, and empathy through hybrid cinematic artworks. His works strive to generate experimental narratives that take viewers on a psychoanalytic journey through the complexities of the Irish experience.
A visual artist, filmmaker and writer, Crotty works extensively in creative education, currently as a researcher and PhD candidate at MTU Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork, a recent lecturer of Visual Arts Education at Maynooth University, and director of Macroom School of Art.
All are welcome to view the exhibition, running in the Linenhall gallery until Saturday, February 22.
COMEDY
Leading the field in an uproarious comedy schedule for the new year is Gearóid Farrelly, when he returns with Gearóid Rage on Friday, January 17.
Following his mammoth Glamour Hammer tour, this hilarious new stand up show touches on the many, many things that make his blood boil.
Fan favourite Farrelly has previously supported international comedy stars including Joan Rivers and Sarah Millican, with the Irish Times describing his approach as 'intelligent reflective comedy'.
FILM
Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers graces the Linenhall's silver screen on Saturday, January 18, reflecting on the artist's transformative years in the south of France.
Directed by David Bickerstaff, this film, produced in collaboration with the National Gallery, London, delves into Van Gogh’s creative evolution, exploring his passion for storytelling and the vibrant, symbolic worlds he created.
Marking 200 years since his first exhibition and a century after the gallery’s first Van Gogh acquisition, this is a rare chance to re-examine the misunderstood genius behind so many iconic masterpieces.
WORKSHOP AND OPEN MIC
To personal development, focus on honing technique and enhancing performance with Conor Armstrong Sanfey as StageScreen Adult Acting Workshop is hosted on January 19. Ideal for actors of all levels of experience, keen to expand their repertoire into different mediums, participants will be guided through the essentials for stage and screen.
Open Mic Poetry and Short Prose, an encouraging platform for experienced poets, storytellers, or newcomers interested in sharing their voice, continues on Monday, January 20. Delightfully, Terry McDonagh has been announced as this month’s featured reader.
