"All talk and no tracks" new TD blasts lack of infrastructure plans for Mayo
Deputy Paul Lawless has voiced sharp criticism of the recently released Programme for Government, pointing to glaring inconsistencies in its approach to regional development, particularly concerning rail infrastructure.
While the government prioritises rail projects in Cork, Galway, Limerick, and Waterford, the Western Rail Corridor—long-promised and urgently needed—has been relegated to yet another “consideration”.
"Once again, the Western Rail Corridor has been kicked down the track," said Deputy Lawless. "Successive governments have been promising this vital project since 2000, yet here we are, still talking about reviews. It’s becoming nothing more than a half-forgotten daydream in the minds of government parties."
The Programme for Government outlines plans to protect and expand existing rail services and invest in rail infrastructure across major cities.
However, when it comes to the Western Rail Corridor, the language is notably tepid. They will merely "consider the report on the future of the Western Rail Corridor." This stands in stark contrast to the clear commitments made for other regions.
"The government talks a big game about balanced regional development," Lawless continued.
"But when it comes to the West, it's all talk and no tracks. We’ve seen in the Programme for Government the prioritisation for Cork, Galway, Limerick, and Waterford, but Mayo and the broader Western region are left waiting at the station."
Deputy Lawless highlighted that the Western Rail Corridor is more than a regional project—it’s a national necessity. "This isn’t just about connecting towns, it’s about economic growth, sustainability, and giving the West a fair shot. Successive governments have used this project as a carrot, and now it seems they’ve forgotten about the stick."
On the broader Programme for Government, Deputy Lawless expressed concern about the overuse of the word "review," and “consideration” noting its presence in critical projects that should already be underway.
"We don’t need another review of the Western Rail Corridor, Knock Airport, or the N17 upgrade. We need action. These projects have been reviewed, studied, and discussed ad nauseam. It’s time for the government to deliver, not dither."
“As a matter of urgency we should open the western rail corridor and connect further lines to Kiltimagh and Knock Airport.”
