Celtic triumph over Westport in Mayo derby thriller
Castlebar Celtic 3
Westport United2
CASTLEBAR CELTIC claimed a hard-fought 3–2 victory over Westport United in an electrifying FAI Junior Cup derby at Celtic Park.
The Hoops, spurred by Eoghan Hughes’ clinical finishing and Dylan Edwards’ creative flair, booked their place in the last 16, leaving local rivals Westport United to reflect on missed opportunities.
The first half was a cagey affair as both sides battled for control. Westport United struck first against the run of play when Darren Browne converted a penalty after a long ball led to a handball decision. Celtic’s response was swift and emphatic, with Jason Hunt volleying home a stunning equaliser after a pinpoint cross from Edwards. The teams went into the break level at 1–1.
The second half saw Celtic take command. Just five minutes in, Edwards floated a perfect cross for Hughes, who rose highest to head home and give the home side a 2–1 lead. Hughes doubled his tally shortly after, pouncing on a rebound from another Edwards delivery to make it 3–1.
Westport United found a lifeline late on when a Dan O’Malley free-kick deflected off Celtic’s Mark Cunningham for an own goal, narrowing the score to 3–2. Despite Westport’s relentless pressure in the dying minutes.
