An Australian first for leading Mayo company

A Mayo produced solar emergency defibrillator unit has been installed in the rural northwest Australia community of Broome.

The life-saving equipment was manufactured in Hollymount-based company Eco Powered Cabinets.

Darren Forde, founder, installed his first units on Croagh Patrick in 2022.

There have been a number of fatal cardiac arrests on the Reek in the past decade and the defibrillator units have been key in saving the lives of several pilgrims and climbers since they were installed.

The award-winning company has gone on to achieve widespread recognition at home and abroad.

Now their first EPC defibrillator in Australia is operational in Broome, located in the southern gateway to the Kimberley region. It will be used to serve remote mines and communities.

Darren told RTÉ News: "We are delighted to continue manufacturing these units in Ireland and to see them recognised as far afield as Australia.

"A further eight defibrillator cabinets are heading out this week. It's great to see our local Mayo company setting the benchmark for equipment that combines innovative technology with sustainable energy."

The managing director of engineer, procurement and construction (EPC) in Australia, Eamon Cunningham, said: "This installation represents a significant milestone.

"Having worked in mining for 14 years, I understand the critical need for accessible, reliable safety equipment in remote locations."

The eco-powered cabinets do not require access to a power supply and can safely store life-saving medication.

The Mayo company has spotted a gap in the market and plans to continue to roll out its service on mountain tops, beaches, greenways and other remote locations.
