Mayo GAA club faces 'unprecedented challenge' after storm damage

McGovern Park, Newport, home of Burrishoole GAA Club, has suffered extensive damage following the devastation caused by Storm Eowyn, leaving the spectator stand in need of a rebuild.

As a club that has long been a cornerstone of the community, members find themselves facing an unprecedented challenge.

The storm, which hit the area with powerful winds and heavy rainfall, caused significant structural damage to the stand, first build in 2010.

This sudden setback is deeply felt by club members, volunteers and the wider community.

Despite the scale of the damage, with the help of our insurance and fundraising, the club is committed to restoring our grounds as quickly as possible.

It will be a huge undertaking, requiring not only financial resources but also support from the GAA community.

"Our club and community have always been built on resilience, teamwork, and support for one another," said Ed Kirby, club chairman.

"This is a difficult moment, but we know that we will get through it. The main thing is our club members and community came through the night without harm.

"In the coming days, we will be announcing a series of fundraising events and donation channels and we encourage all to get involved.

“We’ve built this club and community together, and together we’ll rebuild our stand.

"Burrishoole GAA Club is a community-driven GAA club that has been at the heart of local sports for years.

"We are dedicated to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for players of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. We have built a thriving and close-knit community."
