Sale at Mayo mart went ahead following storm
BALLA Mart went ahead on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. to give people a chance, with some buyers travelling from Donegal and the midlands.
There was only a small number of cattle that were able to make it so they were sold in ring one.
Prices in the bullocks were a good bit up on the last sale, as can be seen by the averages below.
There were some quality stores and they did well, with great bidding among some buyers.
Bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €3.54/kg, store bullocks 400kg to 500kg averaged €3.27/kg, and heavier bullocks 500kg plus averaged €3.43/kg.
A LMX bullock weighing 340kg made €1,550 (€4.56/kg).
Another CHX 365kg made €1,660 (€4.55/kg) for the same farmer.
There were some nice heifers and the average was a good bit up on last week.
Lighter store heifers 300kg to 400kg averaged €3.15/kg, heifers 400kg to 500kg averaged €3.54/kg, while those 500kg plus averaged €3.61/kg.
A smashing Charolais heifer weighing 555kg made €2,100 (€3.78/kg), sold by a farmer from Carrowlacken, Ballina.
A lighter Charolais weighing 455kg made €1,710 (€3.76/kg) for another farmer from Partry.
Cows were sold after the bullocks and heifers, with dry cows 500kg plus averaging €3.10/kg - up on the last week.
Tops was a Charolais cow - the last into the ring - that made €3,240 for a farmer from Bofeenaun.
Another 740kg cow made €2,690 (€3.64/kg) for a Newport farmer, bought by a Northern factory buyer.
In the weanling bulls the tops went for export. Bulls 200kg to 350kg averaged €3.42/kg, with those 350kg to 450kg averaging €3.31/kg.
A Limousin bull that weighed in at 445kg was sold for €1,600. Another BBX, 305kg, made €1,140.
Next Saturday (February 1) will be a special heifer breeding sale with booking on Wednesday, January 29, at 9.30 a.m. for the bullocks and heifers. Cows will be booked at 11 a.m. the same day on Lowcall 0818-301-401.
Weanlings can be booked on Thursday next.
