Mayo drama group present masterpiece Woman and Scarecrow
SAINT Patrick’s Drama Group, Westport, has announced their highly anticipated production of Woman and Scarecrow, a thought-provoking masterpiece by Marina Carr.
The play will take to the stage in Westport Town Hall Theatre on February 10, 11 and 12 before hitting the national circuit.
This marks an exciting milestone for the group as they embark on their third consecutive year competing in the prestigious All-Ireland Drama Festival Circuit.
Building on the success of Dear Frankie in 2023 and Agnes of God in 2024, St. Patrick’s Drama Group has established itself as a formidable presence on the circuit, winning acclaim for their engaging storytelling, powerful performances and artistic excellence. Under the expert direction of Seamas Cafferky, the group is set to captivate audiences once again with Marina Carr’s deeply moving and darkly humorous exploration of life, love, and mortality. Woman and Scarecrow is a searing and poetic examination of a life lived and the regrets left behind.
The play unfolds in the bedroom of a woman who is facing the end of her days. As she reflects on the choices she made, the loves she lost, and the dreams she never fulfilled, she is accompanied by Scarecrow, a spectral figure who is both confidante and critic. Together, they grapple with the truths of the woman’s existence, often with biting wit and sharp humour.
Marina Carr’s haunting dialogue and rich character development create a poignant and unforgettable theatrical experience, balancing light and shadow in equal measure.
St. Patrick’s Drama Group has assembled a stellar cast and creative team for this production:
Martina Ryan stars as Woman, delivering a powerful performance that highlights her extraordinary talent. Martina is no stranger to the drama circuit, having earned numerous awards, particularly for her role in Dear Frankie. Her extensive acting career has taken her to stages across Westport, Glenamaddy, Kilkenny, and beyond.
Alanna Ní Mhíocháin plays Scarecrow in her debut on the full-length drama circuit. Alanna directed the award-winning one-act play The Act of Living last autumn and brings her vast experience in acting and directing across Mayo, Sligo and further afield to this demanding and enigmatic role.
Seamas Cafferky takes on the dual role of director and actor, playing Him. A seasoned performer and director, Seamas is well-known throughout Mayo, Galway and Limerick for his contributions to both drama and musical productions. His extensive experience ensures a compelling portrayal of this complex character.
Colette McGinty portrays Auntie Ah, a role she is sure to imbue with her signature talent. Colette is fresh off winning Best Actress at last year’s All-Ireland Drama Finals for her remarkable performance as Martha Livingstone in Agnes of God.
The production features live singing by the award-winning Sinéad Brogan, whose exquisite voice will add an emotional and atmospheric depth to the performance. Sinéad’s musical contributions are sure to resonate long after the curtain falls.
Behind the scenes, the production is supported by a dedicated and skilled creative team: Alice Burns will expertly stage manage the production, ensuring every detail runs smoothly. Micki Hansberry brings technical expertise as the sound designer. Jamie O’Neill will provide stunning lighting effects to enhance the drama and mood. Daniel McNamara has designed and constructed a set that will beautifully bring Marina Carr’s vision to life on stage.
