Storm Éowyn: EU sending 17 generators to help with power outages in Mayo and other areas
The European Union is sending 17 power generators to help alleviate power outages caused by Storm Éowyn, RTÉ News is reporting.
Thirteen of the generators will come from the EU's strategic reserve based in Poland and Denmark has mobilised an extra four via the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism, according to the European Commission.
In a statement, the Commission said the EU also activated the Copernicus Emergency Management Service to provide analytical support to the authorities.
The EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre has also been monitoring the situation and has been in touch with officials.
The EU's Crisis Management Commissioner Hadja Lahbib said: "Extreme weather events, like Storm Éowyn, increasingly put Europe's disaster resilience to the test.
"But they also demonstrate the growing strength of our joint preparedness and solidarity efforts."
She said her thoughts are with all those affected and first responders who are "doing their best to bring life back to normal".
"I thank Denmark for their prompt offer of assistance and Poland for their excellent collaboration in hosting and delivering the EU power generators to Ireland," she said.
"We are in this together."
