Popular north Mayo amenity closed due to storm damage

A beloved recreational area in north Mayo is set to close for three weeks due to significant storm damage, according to local Fine Gael Councillor Mark Duffy.

In a statement released on social media, Councillor Duffy expressed concerns over the safety of visitors, stating: "Unfortunately, Belleek Woods has to be closed for three weeks until extensive works are performed to make the area safe again. There are many trees ready to collapse from the damage of Storm Éowyn, and these pose a danger to anyone in the woods."

Storm Éowyn recently swept through the county, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Many homes in Mayo remain without power as repair efforts continue.

The storm’s impact has been particularly severe in wooded areas, where strong winds have uprooted trees and weakened others, creating hazardous conditions.

Local authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage and have urged the public to respect the temporary closure for their own safety.

Residents and visitors who frequent Belleek Woods for walking, cycling and outdoor activities have been advised to seek alternative locations until the necessary work is completed.
