Mayo in line to benefit as Connacht GAA launches Hurling Development Plan
Connacht GAA has officially launched its new Hurling Development Plan at the Centre of Excellence in Bekan, and Mayo is in line to benefit from it.
Developed by the Connacht GAA coaching committee, chaired by Padraig McGourty, alongside Connacht Provincial C&G manager Cathal Cregg and assistant provincial C&G manager Damian Curley, the plan is set to significantly boost the game of hurling in the province’s four developing counties – Mayo, Leitrim, Sligo and Roscommon.
The core aim of the plan is to maximise each player’s potential by ensuring the opportunity to play hurling is within 20 minutes of their local GAA club.
The plan’s objectives are focused on four main areas:
- Supporting existing clubs: strengthening the 28 current clubs in the province
- Developing new clubs: expanding hurling opportunities across the region
- Combined academy squads: building on talent development and collaboration.
- Increased staff support: boosting the availability of full-time coaching and administrative staff
POTENTIAL
Among the initiatives highlighted are the introduction of a dedicated night for hurling fixtures, enhanced coach education programmes, and a recruitment campaign aimed at attracting volunteer coaches from outside the current pool.
Speaking at the launch, Cathal Cregg expressed his excitement about the plan’s potential. He said: “We are extremely pleased with the new plan, which is the result of an extensive and collaborative process. Huge credit goes to the various committees and stakeholders who engaged and help formula the plan We’ve worked hard to maximise the resources we develop the game of hurling to as many people as possible in these counties.”
The chair of the Connacht GAA coaching committee, Padraig McGourty, added: “Many people contributed, both staff and volunteers, including the National Hurling Committee, Connacht GAA Council, county boards and local clubs, all working together to produce such a comprehensive document.
“Our goal is clear: more games for all participants, stronger underage structures, and increased involvement at all levels.
“We are confident that, through the measures outlined in this plan, we will make great strides in growing the game of hurling.”
The launch of this plan marks a significant step in the development of hurling in Connacht. The new plan is designed to take efforts to the next level, driving higher participation rates and creating even greater opportunities for players across the region.
