Road closure expected to cause chaos in Mayo town this weekend

Explosion impact keeping Lower Charles Street closed, complicating a packed sporting Sunday

Castlebar faces significant traffic challenges this Bank Holiday weekend in the aftermath a gas explosion at the Imperial Blue Indian restaurant on Lower Charles Street last Sunday.

Mayo County Council has confirmed the street will remain closed due to public safety concerns after an incident on Sunday night that injured two people, with their conditions described as non-life threatening.

The closure comes at a critical time, with thousands of fans expected to converge on the town.

On Sunday, Mayo will host Galway in the Allianz National League, while Castlebar Celtic play in the Connacht Cup, potentially exacerbating traffic congestion.

"It's because of the risk the building poses to public safety," county officials stated.

Mayo County Council has pledged to optimise traffic flow during this challenging period, urging residents and visitors to plan their routes carefully.
