LAMA award nomination for Mayo county town's Christmas lights

CASTLEBAR'S Christmas lights have been nominated for a LAMA award, the All Ireland Community and Council Awards.

The lighting scheme and events such as the Christmas market and Christmas Magic at the Barracks attracted people from all over the country to visit and shop in the county town.

The lights on the sculptures on the town's roundabouts drew particularly favourable comments when discussed at the monthly municipal district meeting.

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne said a lot of work went into it and the lights could be extended next year if funding allows.

Councillor Blackie Gavin said the lighting scheme was the talk of the west of Ireland, with people coming from all over to shop.

Tribute was paid to all involved in the initiative.
