Top theatre coming to Mayo arts centre

IT'S officially theatre season at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar, with a host of upcoming performances to relish, including the welcome return of Little John Nee with Zeitgeist Jukebox on Thursday, February 20.

Set in an old warehouse, the show invites audiences to respond to a mysterious notice on a lamppost and join an eccentric band in the making of the greatest album of the 21st century. With primitive recording equipment and a ticking clock, it is now or never.

Zeitgeist Jukebox is an immersive theatre experience framed by Little John Nee’s masterful storytelling; a soulful antidote to the disconnection of our times, and a testament to the healing power of music.

Nee’s unique style, deemed 'gentle punk', blends music and fascinating narrative to create a humorous, heart-warming experience. Audiences are invited to relax, laugh and even join the band if moved by the music.

A prolific writer and performer based in the west of Ireland, Little John Nee toured most recently with the successful, Nettle Horse.

THE SNAPPER

Treading the boards on Friday, February 28, is Kiltimagh’s ever impressive Clann Machua Drama Group, with its stage adaptation of Roddy Doyle's beloved novel, The Snapper.

An undoubtedly entertaining evening of drama beckons as the play explores the vibrant and sometimes chaotic life of the Rabbitte family, a motley bunch of loveable ne'er-do-wells whose everyday purgatory is rich with hangovers, dogshit and dirty dishes.

When the older sister announces her pregnancy, the family are forced to rally together and discover the strangeness of intimacy. But the question remains: which friend of the family is the father of Sharon's child?

INDIGESTION AND MORE

Seamus O’Rourke excels at his craft in the deeply relatable tale Indigestion on Thursday, March 27.

Written and performed by O’Rourke, an unnamed character grapples with depression, anger and love, while navigating misfortune and mayhem. A compelling and humorous portrayal of a man’s unpredictable life, from a rural childhood to a turbulent adulthood in London, his journey is marked by both struggle and hope.

Sensitive, intelligent and refreshingly forthright, the poignant Indigestion intertwines laughter and tears, capturing a life not much different to our own.

Additional upcoming productions include The Murder of Michael Collins, on February 6, when historical entertainer Paddy Cullivan brings the incredible story of the death of Ireland’s first Commander-in-Chief; and, on May 9, Seven Letters, written and directed by Rian Flatley, tells the story of three spirited women whose circumstances have brought them together.
