Councillor Al McDonnell

Access priority after Mayo bridge collapse

URGENT assistance is needed following the collapse of Derassa bridge, Tourmakeady, councillors have urged.

There is a huge hole in the road, Councillor Al McDonnell informed a Castlebar Municipal District meeting.

He was hoping some kind of temporary pass could be put in place to facilitate a small number of regular users, with one particular farm having its facilities on one side and sheep on the other.

Keep the road closed to the general public, he said, but he wanted to see these people facilitated.

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne said a submission was made to the department, but like every time, they write down looking for more information, and the bridge is still gone.

With lambing, it needed to be given priority, he said.

Members were told funding approval was received last week and design work is underway.

A permanent solution will be done as quickly as a temporary one.
