BBX heifer, 385kg, sold for €4,050 at last evening's weanling sale at Balla Mart.

Exceptional prices for heifers at Mayo weanling sale

THERE were some great shapely weanlings out for the weanling sale at Balla Mart yesterday (Tuesday) evening, and trade is getting higher every sale, which is great for the seller.

Heifer calves saw great buying from farmers with some making exceptional prices over €5/kg.

Bulls 200kg to 350kg averaged €4.19/kg with the tops making over €5.00/kg. Bull weanlings 350kg to 450kg averaged €4.14/kg and heavier bulls 450kg plus averaged €3.83/kg.

Bull prices included:

480kg BBX €2,280 (€4.75/kg)

390kg LMX €2,130 (€5.46/kg)

375kg CHX €1,920 (€5.12/kg)

365kg LMX €1,880 (€5.15/kg)

340kg LMX €1,880 (€5.53/kg)

325kg LMX €1,740 (€5.35/kg)

The best were all bought by exporters for an average of between €4.10 to €4.80/kg.

A cracking LMX bull born May ‘24, weighing 340kg, made €1,880 for a farmer from Westport who also had more weanlings that did very well.

Another LMX bull weighing 390kg made €2,130 for a farmer from Ballyheane, while a heavier BBX bull weighing 480kg was sold for €2,280 by a Ballyvary farmer.

There was some trade in the heifers, as can be witnessed by the averages and examples of how well they were selling.

Lighter store heifers 200kg to 350kg averaged €3.98/kg, heifers 350kg to 450kg averaged €4.25/kg, with stock 450kg plus averaging €4.62/kg. Prices included:

330kg LMX €2,350 (€7.12/kg)

A BBX Hong Wang BB9463 heifer born June ’24, weighing 385kg, was sold for €4,050 (€10.52/kg) by a farmer from Ballinrobe.

There was also a 475kg LMX heifer that made €3,250, sold by a farmer from Tuam.
