Mayo appeal for new measures to protect local businesses
An elected representative has expressed 'deep concern' over the recent closures of businesses in Mayo.
Councillor Harry Barrett said: "The shut down of Mill Lane Restaurant in Castlebar and Carney’s Bar and Eating House in Ballinrobe highlights the growing challenges our local businesses are facing.
"These closures are not isolated incidents—they are part of a worrying trend that is putting the future of our town centres at risk.
"Rising costs, inflation, and tough business conditions are making it impossible for many local businesses to survive.
"I know the owner of one of these businesses and if he cannot make a living in the catering trade in this county, nobody can.
"I am calling now on the Junior Minister for Retail and Business, Alan Dillon, to take immediate action to stop the decline of our town centres."
Councillor Barrett called for the following measures must be introduced:
1. Zero VAT for Small Food Businesses
– Any town centre business involved in food production with fewer than 20 employees should pay 0% VAT. This will ease financial pressure and help small food businesses stay open.
2. Tax on Vacant Commercial Properties
– Commercial premises left vacant for more than four months should face a heavy tax. This will encourage landlords to rent out spaces at affordable prices, creating more opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
3. Special Tax Incentives for Town Centre Businesses
– Businesses in town centres should get tax breaks on their profits to encourage young entrepreneurs to enter the retail and restaurant sectors.
He added: "Mayo’s town centres have always been the heart of our communities. If we don’t act now, more businesses will close, and we will lose what makes our towns unique.
"I urge Minister Dillon to step up and introduce these measures immediately.
"With the right support, we can stop business closures, help local entrepreneurs, and bring life back to our town centres.
"The time for action is now. We must fight to save our towns before it’s too late."
