Fixed cameras have positive impact on Mayo road but more needed in county
INTRODUCING more fixed cameras on roads would help reduce speed, a member of Mayo's Roads Strategic Policy Committee has suggested.
Christy Hyland has highlighted the hugely positive effect the recently installed cameras on the N5 Swinford bypass have had.
In Mayo last year, 19 people lost their lives in tragedies on the roads. The RSA estimate that each fatality costs €2 million, highlighted Mr. Hyland, amounting to €348m nationally last year.
With that in mind, his focus was on prevention and he asked how much the fixed cameras on the N5 cost, highlighting their positive impact.
He was sure fixed cameras could be rolled out across the county and maybe nationally, saying cameras are on every road in the UK and they do reduce speed and accidents.
If they were rolled out here they would reduce fatalities, he said.
“It's not rocket science.”
