Mayo MEP appointed lead for EU-UK issues on Agriculture Committee
MEP Maria Walsh has been appointed as the standing rapporteur for UK matters on the European Parliament’s Agriculture and Rural Development Committee.
In this role, MEP Walsh will steer discussions and policy on issues affecting relations between the EU and United Kingdom.
The role will include engaging with agriculture stakeholders, scrutinising the impact of shifting trade rules, and shaping policy responses that address the unique challenges faced by Irish exporters and farmers.
With 38% (€6.8 billion in 2023) of Irish agri-food exports destined for the UK, ensuring fair and balanced trade policies for the Irish agricultural sector has never been more critical.
Said Ms. Walsh: This position will give me a leading role in dealing with the UK on a range of issues crucial to the Irish and EU agricultural sectors. I’m grateful to the EPP Group for supporting my appointment; belonging to the largest political force in Europe helps us to get things done for the benefit of our constituents.
“I intend to make full use of this position to ensure that the interests of Irish and European farmers are defended in relations with the UK, especially in light of the upcoming review of the implementation of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA). It is essential that no changes are made to the detriment of our farmers, especially those in my constituency of Midlands-North West in border areas.”
She continued: “Brexit has impacted the agri-food trade more than almost any other sector, with the classification of the UK as a third country for the EU presenting serious challenges for the Irish agricultural industry. An additional challenge now faces Irish exporters, as new UK requirements for agri-food imports came into effect in January 2024.
“With these new import requirements, along with the UK’s evolving geopolitical dynamics, it is essential that we champion policies that protect our trade interests and ensure our farmers receive the fair treatment they deserve. I am committed to working to build a resilient framework that supports our agri-food sector and secures our future on both sides of the Irish Sea.”
