Suite of rooms in famous Dublin hotel named after Mayo-born singer

A suite of rooms in the famous Shelburne Hotel in Dublin has recently been named in honour of Castlebar-born prima donna Margaret Burke Sheridan.

It's all thanks to the efforts of her biographer, Anne Chambers – also a native of Castlebar.

“The Shelbourne was Margaret Burke Sheridan's last residence prior to her death in April 1958,” explained Anne. “She stayed there courtesy of a friend and patron, Ruth Houghton-Axe, a wealthy businesswoman from New York State.”

Anne added: “Much thanks to the management and staff of the hotel for their interest and help in keeping Sheridan's memory alive. Hopefully her hometown of Castlebar will do likewise someday.”

The suite is adorned with copies of some letters and artefacts from Sheridan's operatic archive

from Anne's collection.
