Mayo street set to reopen after being closed for over two weeks
Lower Charles Street, Castlebar, is set to re-open later this week after being closed since January 26 last due to an explosion in a restaurant at the location.
The cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District has confirmed the traffic barriers on the street will be removed at some stage on Wednesday next, probably in the late afternoon or evening.
Councillor Donna Sheridan said repairs works on making the damaged building safe have been ongoing for a number of days and are due to be completed by midweek.
It follows the decision of Mayo County Council to issue a Section 3 notice on the owner of the property to make the property secure. It is understood much of the roof has been removed.
The closure has led to serious traffic congestion in the town centre and particularly so during peak times.
Two people are recovering from injuries sustained in the explosion at the Imperial Blue Indian Restaurant.
Meanwhile, Councillor Sheridan has confirmed that works at the roundabout at the nearby Barrack Bridge will be completed before the reopening of Lower Charles Street on Wednesday evening in order to avoid further disruption.
