Five Mayo men aiming for Sigerson Cup medal

There will be plenty of local interest in the Electric Ireland HE Sigerson Cup final between UCD and DCU Dóchas Éireann, which throws in at 7.30 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) in the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence, Bekan.

While Dublin have the highest representation with 18 players across both competing panels, Mayo have one of the strongest representations with five players involved.

Sam Callinan (Ballina Stephenites), Darragh Reilly (Parke/Keelogues/Crimlin) and Diarmuid Duffy (Ballinrobe) will all be on board for UCD, with Darragh Joyce (Claremorris) and Finbar McLaughlin (Westport) part of the DCU panel.

The Southsiders, managed by Galway’s John Divilly, are rated as slight favourites having defeated TUD in a penalty shootout in the semi-final after the sides finished level at 1-7 to 0-10 at the end of extra time.

DCU secured their place in the showpiece with a 0-14 to 0-10 win over Ulster University and hope to win a sixth Sigerson Cup title overall, and a first since 2020.

UCD, for their part, sit top of the roll of honour with 34 titles, with their most recent success arriving in 2018.

Mayo’s Stephen Coen was captain for that 2018 success, making him the third Mayo man to captain a Sigerson-winning team this century after Aidan Higgins (Sligo IT, 2002) and Michael Moyles (Sligo IT, 2004).

The match will be shown live on TG4 and referee is Sean Hurson (Tyrone).
