Increased €40.5 million roads allocation for Mayo

THE Department of Transport has announced a €40,566,060 allocation for regional and local roads across Mayo in 2025 this morning.

Minister of State Alan Dillon has welcomed the funding, which marks an increase from the €36.7 million allocated in 2024 (€29.3m in 2023) and continues the trend of rising investment in Mayo’s transport infrastructure.

The funding will be distributed across various crucial initiatives, including:

• Restoration Improvement Works – €21.6 million

• Restoration Maintenance – €2.7 million

• Supplementary Restoration Maintenance – €2.3 million

• Discretionary Grant – €5.3 million

• Bridge Rehabilitation Works – €933,500

• Specific Improvement Grants – €1.17 million

• Strategic Regional & Local Roads – €1.4 million

• Safety Improvement Works – €849,600

• Climate Change Adaptation & Resilience Works – €1.07 million

KEY PROJECTS FUNDED IN 2025

Several major infrastructure projects will benefit from this increased funding, improving road safety, connectivity, and resilience against extreme weather conditions. Among the most notable projects are:

• R332 Kilmaine to Tuam (Foxhall) Upgrade – €1,200,000

• Cong Outer Relief Road – €200,000

• Killala Road Improvement (R314) – €1,000,000

• Derrywash Road Drainage Upgrade (L1710) – €38,000

• Lahardane to Crossmolina Road Upgrade (R313) – €30,000

• Bunduala Sea Wall Repair – €55,000

• Islandeady Drainage Scheme (L1811) – €41,000

• Newport Town Bridge Rehabilitation – €195,000

• Caher Road Improvement (L-1913-71) – €56,000

• Mullahanowey Road Drainage (L13254) – €25,000

Minister Dillon has been a strong advocate for increasing investment in Mayo’s transport network and ensuring key projects receive the funding needed to proceed.

He commented: “This is a fantastic boost for Mayo, reflecting our ongoing commitment to enhancing road safety, improving connectivity, and making our transport infrastructure more resilient to climate challenges. Projects like the Kilmaine to Tuam upgrade and the Lahardane to Crossmolina road improvements will make a tangible difference to people’s lives, benefiting commuters, businesses, and local communities.”

The increased funding, he said, represents a clear commitment from the government to deliver for rural Ireland, ensuring that vital roads in Mayo are upgraded and maintained to the highest standards.
