Mayo street gets green light to finally reopen in aftermath of explosion

Castlebar Municipal District has received the green light to reopen Lower Charles Street in the county town.

The road has been closed to traffic since January 26 last when an explosion took place in the Blue Imperial Restaurant.

Health and safety concerns relating to the structure of the building have been addressed.

Mayo County Council is satisfied that the risk to public safety has been addressed sufficiently to allow it reopen the road this evening.

The footpath will remain closed off to the public for the time being.

A team has been mobilising to remove barriers and diversion signs to get the road open.

The news has been welcomed by Councillor Blackie Gavin, who thanked everybody involved in conducting the necessary works over recent days.

Councillor Donna Sheridan, cathaoirleach, Castlebar Municipal District, said the reopening is good news for the town after three weeks of traffic congestion and uncertainty.

She paid tribute to the contractors who carried out the remedial works as well as Mayo County Council staff for their efforts.

Councillor Harry Barrett also joined in welcoming the completion of works to allow the busy street to reopen.
