Call on government for urgent funding to tackle Mayo housing crisis

“THE housing crisis in Mayo is spiralling out of control, and yet the government continues to turn a blind eye,” according to Independent Councillor Harry Barrett.

Latest figures show that homelessness in the county has risen dramatically, with 221 people now in emergency accommodation.

“Families in Castlebar and across Mayo are at breaking point, struggling to keep a roof over their heads while the government sits on its hands," said Councillor Barrett.

He stated: “Mayo County Council is doing everything it can with the limited resources available, but it is being asked to do the impossible without the proper funding.

“The housing maintenance budget simply isn’t enough to refurbish the council houses that desperately need work, leaving many homes lying idle while families remain on waiting lists. Even Council staff - those working day in, day out to serve the people of Mayo - are worried about their own housing situations as rents continue to soar.

“Meanwhile, Airbnb is bleeding the rental market dry, and what has the Government done? Nothing. They sit on the fence while young families in Castlebar and beyond are locked out of the rental market.

“On top of that, derelict and vacant properties litter our towns and villages, yet the government refuses to introduce real fines and levies to tackle the problem. Where is the action? Where is the leadership?”

Added Councillor Barrett: “I'm very worried about where things are going in terms of homelessness and the effects on children and young families, so I am now calling on Mayo’s TDs and this government to step up and provide Mayo County Council with the funding it needs to address this crisis.

“People in Mayo need homes, not more excuses. The time for talk is over - it's time for action.”
