Mayo county town grieving death of popular personality

The death of Brian Smyth, Rathbawn, and formerly of Barrack Bridge, Castlebar, is deeply mourned in the community.

A member of one of the county town's most popular families, he died peacefully yesterday in the wonderful care of the staff of Mayo University Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Brian worked as a technician with Eircom for many years and was held in high esteem by his colleagues.

An affable and good-natured personality, fond tributes are being paid to him on social media.

"A well travelled and interesting person with whom I enjoyed many a mile walking," one stated.

Another said: "Brian was so lovely as a neighbour and to have the crack with, a very gentle man."

Castlebar Celtic FC has extended condolences to the Smyth family. Brian played with the club back in the 1970s.
