Proposal for two private Mayo burial plots rejected
PLANNERS have rejected a proposal for two private burial plots in a back garden in north Mayo.
They are concerned it could set a precedent for such developments in the county.
The site in question is in Doohoma and it was recommended for refusal as there is no policy relating to private burial plots in the Mayo County Development Plan.
The proposed site for the two plots is to the rear of a dwelling, towards the end of the back garden.
One third party submission was received by Mayo County Council setting out how the site is adjacent to private dwellings, posing a health risk, and also concerned that water supply infrastructure will be affected.
Situated on a high elevation, the site drains into the Roy Stream, which runs into the Blacksod Bay SAC and SPA, the submission stated, while pointing out that Blacksod Bay is a haven for bird species and a valuable fishing ground.
Two grounds for refusing planning permission were set out by the planning department.
The proposed development by itself or by the precedent, which a grant of permission for it would set for other such developments, would pose an unnecessary risk to ground water and surface water sources, and would be prejudicial to public health.
In the absence of an AA screening report Mayo County Council is not satisfied that the proposed development would not have a negative impact on the Mullet/Blacksod Bay Complex SAC and Blacksod Bay/Broad Haven SPA.
Therefore, the proposed development would be contrary to the proper planning and development of the area.
