Mayo roots run deep for rising football star John Patrick

A young footballer with deep Mayo connections is making waves in French football, having recently completed a high-profile move to Stade de Reims and earning plaudits for his performance against Paris Saint-Germain.

John Patrick, whose grandfather Michael hails from Ballyhaunis, has already achieved what many young footballers can only dream of - playing in Spain's La Liga and now competing in France's top division, all at the age of 21.

Growing up in Madrid with an Irish father, John's connection to Mayo remained strong through regular family visits.

"I have visited Ireland many times since I was a baby. I would go over in the summer and see the family," John recalls. "A few times I'd go to the football pitches in Ballyhaunis with my brother just so we could play and I loved it."

His grandfather Michael's passion for Mayo GAA also influenced the young midfielder. "My grandfather Michael is a really big fan of Mayo. I'd follow them as I know he loved them, but every time they got to a final and lost I'd always feel a bit sad," he shares.

John's football journey began at age three in Madrid, progressing through the ranks before joining Real Madrid's academy in 2012. After stints with local clubs Canillas and Alcobendas, he signed for Getafe in 2018, where he would later make history as the club's youngest-ever debutant at age 17.

His Irish connection has already seen him represent the country at under-21 level, earning two caps including a memorable debut against Sweden in Marbella. "My family were very proud," says John of his international experience.

The young midfielder's recent move to French side Stade de Reims has already yielded impressive results, with a standout performance against French champions PSG in his early days at the club. "The first days have been great, adapting to a new club and new city," he says. "I'm excited about working hard and helping the club improve their results."

A highlight reel of his performance against PSG has garnered attention from football fans both in France and back home in Mayo. John describes himself as a player who "likes to have the ball, to get the ball, who likes to play forward and make key passes."

As he continues his promising career in France, the connection to his Mayo roots remains strong, providing yet another sporting story for the county to follow with pride.
