Mayo clubs perform well at 36th Lidl Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé Football Festival

Burrishoole reached the final of the senior ladies' cup at the Lidl Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé 2025, the famed Gaelic football tournament which took place all across the Dingle Peninsula over the weekend.

Last year’s Comórtas champions, Burrishoole togged out once again in a six-team round robin senior ladies' competition along with another Mayo club, Carnacon.

Burrishoole overcame former winners Crosserlough of Cavan in the first round by 3-12 to 2-6, with midfielder Jennifer Canley the stand out performer. Next up for Burrishole was Clare’s Doora Barefield, who they beat by 2-5 to 1-6, with Canley again the star player, thus booking their place in the final.

Carnacon defeated Milltown of Westrmeath in their first round by 3-5 to 1-5, with Cliodhna Dowling at corner forward claiming the majority of the scores and midfielder Fiona McHale also to the fore. Carnacon had Fingallians of Dublin in the semi-final and they led by 2-1 to 1-1 at half-time, Dowling scoring 1-1 of their tally. However, tired legs in the second half allowed the Dubs back into it and they eventually ran out losing to them by 3-3 to 3-6.

The Dublin v Mayo (Fingallians v Burrishoole) final was a one-sided affair and it was the Dubs who had more firepower up front and they came out on top on a scoreline of 6-5 to 2-4, with Elaine Fitzpatrick at full-forward scoring a brace of goals for her side.

Meanwhile, Achill ladies competed in the four-team junior cup. They lost out to the eventual winners, Annascaul/Castlegregory of Kerry, in the straight semi-final by 1-9 to 1-6.

Sixteen counties from the four provinces of Ireland had clubs taking part in the 36th edition of the Lidl Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé, with 28 adult men’s and ladies' club teams coming together for a weekend of competitive football and social events, including popular Irish band Super Céilí at Páidí Ó Sé’s Pub in Ventry.

The football festival, which was founded by eight-time All-Ireland winner Páidí Ó Sé, is supported by Lidl Ireland, EJ Menswear, Kerry County Council Tourism Unit, Medel Healthcare, Dooctor.ie, Fáilte Ireland and Údarás na Gaeltachta, and has attracted over 30,000 club players since it was founded in 1989.

Comórtas chairman Pádraig Óg Ó Sé said: “A big thanks to the Mayo teams for coming down. They conducted themselves very well. We were gifted with great weather conditions and luckily there were no injuries of note to report over the weekend.

“We thank all our title sponsors, including Lidl, who are a key driver of the growth of ladies' Gaelic games in Ireland through their LGFA sponsorship. They contribute every year to the vision my father had, which was to promote the club game and also to attract people to the beautiful Dingle Peninsula.”
