Mayo Senator calls for urgent action on Mayo road investment
Newly elected Fine Gael senator Mark Duffy has called for immediate action on key road projects in Mayo.
In the Seanad he addressed the urgent need for investment in the N26, N58, and R312. Speaking about transport infrastructure, he noted that 18 people lost their lives on Mayo roads in 2024 alone.
“The preferred route option for the N26 will be confirmed by the end of the year. This project has been talked about for decades—now we need action,” Senator Duffy stated.
He also addressed the Safe Routes to Schools programme, criticising the low level of investment in Mayo despite €290 million being spent nationwide. “It’s a brilliant model, but we need our fair share. We don’t need small, tick-the-box projects—safety must come first.”
Duffy welcomed commitments from Minister of State for Transport Jerry Buttimer but warned against excessive spending on consultants instead of real progress on the ground.
