Mayo Young Sports Stars: Powerful strokes by impressive rowing trio

Three members of the one club - Denny Murphy, Tiernan Gaughan and Kate Ginty ofTullaghan Bay Rowing Club - will collectively collect the rowing award at The Connaught Telegraph Mayo Young Sports Stars 2025 Awards this year.

Denny is representative of the youngest junior rowers. Eager to learn and enthusiastic, he shows a mature respect for the sea. He's a team player too, competing last year in currach racing and indoor events within his own age category, winning what is sure to be the the first of many accolades at the regatta on Inisturk Island in 2004.

Tiernan, meanwhile, has displayed drive and determination in the past year as he seeks to progress in coastal rowing. He won the first coastal rowing medal for the club with a composite crew at the Irish Coastal Rowing Championships. He has an infectious energy and enthusiasm that will no doubt see him add to his achievements.

Kate is representative of how commitment and diligence will serve any young athlete well. She has been rowing for a number of years and her commitment to training never falters. She represented the club at the Irish Coastal Champioships, winning a medal, and was on the podium again at the Irish Indoor Rowing Championships in January this year. Given her work ethic and how she balances training with teenage life, Kate is likely to excel going forward.

Tullaghan Bay Rowing Club was founded in 2014 to continue the coastal tradition in Erris. Since its foundation, the club has been involved in currach racing nationally, and has a strong presence nationally and internationally in indoor rowing.

Coastal rowing, a sport that is to feature in the next Olympics for the first time, is the club's latest venture, with the first national medals won in recent years. Locally the club provides a valuable training and social outlet for up to 100 members in north Mayo. Juniors through to masters rowers enjoy athletic and sporting training that brings the community together for recreation and competition.

The Tullaghan Bay rowers will receive their awards at The Connaught Telegraph Mayo Young Sports Stars Awards in Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar, on Friday, March 7. For tickets, contact Aiden Henry on (087) 6582141 or aiden.henry@con-telegraph.ie.
