Check your smoke alarms - Mayo councillor's plea
HOMEOWNERS have been urged to check their smoke alarms.
The plea has been issued by Belmullet Councillor Gerry Coyle who spoke of witnessing the 'devestation' of local pub The High Chaparral burning after fire broke out in the premises recently.
He commented on the vicious speed at which the blaze spread and engulfed the roof and entire premises in Geesala.
Arising from the experience, he had a plea for everyone to do one thing: “Please check your smoke alarms.”
Another fire hazard was highlighted by Councillor Brendan Mulroy - and not for the first time - at the monthly Westport-Belmullet Municipal District meeting.
Many people don't use their front doors and don't know where the key is, he said, which is a significant risk if a fire breaks out.
He found when canvassing that people talked out the window to him or directed him to the back door as they coudn't find the key for their front door.
Meanwhile the meeting heard that the Munnelly family who own the fire-damaged pub in Geesala are committed to getting it back up and running again.
Hailed as real community people, they were wished well for the future.
