Flooding flashpoints in Castlebar area need attention
A NUMBER of flooding flashpoints in the Castlebar area need attention.
They include Mountgordon on the Westport Road where the plight of people getting 'marooned' was highlighted by Councillor Ger Deere at a municipal meeting.
A new surface water drain is required at the location, Councillor Blackie Gavin suggested.
He also asked when will lights at Mountgordon be switched on.
The members were told the council has started looking at the flooding situation at the location.
In Islandeady, there is flooding at the level crossing in Cloggernagh, Councillor Deere told management.
It's going to cause an accident on a dark night when there's a flood there and someone ends up in the barriers, he warned.
“It's a complete lake,” said Councillor Deere.
The road was done there a year or two ago, but it poses a danger, particularly for people who don't know the road, who will drive straight into the flood and into the level crossing gate.
Also in Islandeady, there's issues at the road coming off the old Westport Road, with chaos during recent frost where six cars went in on the embankment.
It's a lethal surface, he said. Like a skating rink even when there is no ice.
Flooding at Cashel in Turlough was also raised by Councillor Gavin who said there is a problem with drainage, with craters on the road, and it's highly dangerous.
