Mayo Young Sports Stars: Making headlines from South Mayo to South America

A repeat winner at The Connaught Telegraph Mayo Young Sports Stars Awards, Oisín Joyce made headlines from his native South Mayo all the way to South America last year.

The Lake District AC member won Ireland’s first ever throws medal at the World Athletics Under 20 Championships, claiming a superb bronze in the men’s javelin competition in Lima, Peru, last summer.

The 19-year-old Ballinrobe man produced the performance of his life to make the podium, extending his own Irish Under 20 record out to 73.89m – a 17cm improvement on his previous best.

With the bronze, Oisin – who is coached by his father Pádraic – claimed what is only Ireland’s fifth medal at these championships. Unsurprisingly, he was named Under 20 Athlete of the Year at the 123.ie National Athletics Awards last year.

He will be presented with his award at the gala awards ceremony in Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar, on Friday March 7. Tickets are available now and can be purchased by contacting Aiden Henry on (087) 6582141 or aiden.henry@con-telegraph.ie.
