Compelling group exhibition opening at Mayo arts centre
AMONG the Linenhall Arts Centre’s upcoming event schedule is the launch of a compelling group exhibition, Mapping Stories | Scéalmhapáil, this evening (Friday, February 28) at 5 p.m.
Curated by Marianne O’Kane Boal, it showcases the work of 10 Mayo-based artists who participated in the Bolay Programme 2024, an initiative supporting visual artists through mentorship and professional development.
Featuring a vast range of artistic disciplines including drawing, painting, sculpture, print, photography, film, audio and collage, the exhibition explores personal and collective narratives that shape the artists’ creative journeys.
The participating artists include Thomas Brawn, Ann Conmy, Joanna Hopkins, Louise Hynes, Davinia Johnson, Anthony D. Kelly, Katherine (Kate) Kelly, Jo Killalea, Sharon Ní Chuilibín and Martina O’Connor.
Reflecting on the project, curator Marianne O’Kane Boal shared: “It has been a pleasure to mentor these artists, guiding them through diverse approaches and working methods while maintaining a shared goal for this exhibition.”
Presented in association with Visual Artists Ireland, Mapping Stories | Scéalmhapáil highlights the impact of mentorship and collaboration in contemporary Irish art.
Running until Saturday, April 5, all are warmly invited to attend the launch or view the exhibition.
EXHIBITION SCREEN SERIES
Experience history unfold on the silver screen on Saturday, March 22, with Dawn of Impressionism - Paris 1874.
As the Exhibition on Screen series continues, this captivating film delves into the pivotal moment when a group of radical artists defied tradition and staged their own exhibition, giving birth to Impressionism.
Featuring the stunning Musée d’Orsay exhibition, it brings fresh insight into the struggles and triumphs of these maverick painters. Told through the voices of those who witnessed it first hand, this is an utterly absorbing cinematic journey into the art movement that changed everything.
THE WRITE HOURS
The Write Hours, a six-week series of workshops led by Alice Kinsella, commences on March 11, at which writers of all levels can explore different aspects of writing, with prompts, writing time, and peer feedback.
An Arts Council Next Generation Artist, Kinsella brings invaluable experience and insight to her teaching, which is evident in the structured, and nurturing environment she creates. This Mayo-based poet and prose writer is author of Sexy Fruit (2018), Milk (2023), and editor of Empty House (2021).
No prior experience is required, however advance booking is essential.
An encouraging platform for experienced poets, storytellers or newcomers interested in sharing their voice, Open Mic Poetry and Short Prose returns on Monday, March 3. With the latest featured reader being Lizann Gorman, both listeners and readers are very welcome.
