Removal of village name from Mayo signs 'ridiculous'

THE removal of village names, to be replaced with road numbers, on signs in west Mayo has been branded as 'ridiculous'.

It has happened at a number of locations in the Westport area, including Fahy, Cogaula, Slogger and Ballinlough.

Councillor Johnny O'Malley has demanded to know why the village names were taken down.

If someone was calling to your home, people wouldn't know the road number to give them directions, he pointed out, whereas the vilage name had been on the signs.

It was the most ridiculous thing he had ever seen. The numbers could be left, but the names also needed to be put back on the signage, he told council management at a municipal meeting.

The new signposts with five black lines on rural roads, denoting a 60kph speed zone, also continue to cause confusion, according to Councillor Chris Maxwell.

People don't understand them or the logic behind them, he said. To have put '60' on the sign would have been so simple and everyone would know where they stood.

Councillor Gerry Coyle has experienced a different issue with the new speed signs. When they first appeared his car read them as 60kph.

However in recent days it's been reporting he's driving in a 80kph zone.
