Bourke's Castle, with lots of the shrubbery that had been covering it now cut back.

Initial 'facelift' works at Mayo castle

SOME initial 'facelift' works have taken place at Bourke's Castle, near Lough Lannagh in Castlebar.

Councillor Ger Deere has been leading calls for the castle to be cleaned up and realised as an important local attraction.

He said: “I'm delighted that following a proposal I made some time back that the ivy and shrubbery be cleared from around what is known as Bourke's Castle has now taken place.

“I hope that other works I suggested such as re-pointing, floodlighting, information signage and fencing at this historic building will happen in the near future.

“It will add to the many attractions to the wonderful amenity of Lough Lannagh.”

The castle was built about 1580 by a son of Edmond Bourke of Castlebar.
