Mayo Young Sports Stars: Wheely good year for top class cyclist
University of Limerick student Abi Conway completed her first year cycling competitively in road racing last year.
The Covey Wheelers Westport Cycling Club athlete took part in several races around Ireland, including the National Road Series, which comprised of six rounds, in which she finished second overall.
Her first road race win came on May 11 in the ladies' race in the Crotty Cup, while she also participated in the Intervarsity competition representing the University of Limerick, in which she finished seventh.
Another win came for Abi at the Newry three-day event, and she rode in the prestigious international Ras Na Mban 2024, cycling 400km over five days as a guest with UCD Cycling Club, who were winners of the Best Irish Team award.
Abi was named the Connaught Cycling Women’s Rider of the Year 2024, was a recipient of a sports scholarship in the University of Limerick 2024 (high performance student), and was awarded the Martin Sheridan Bursary Award 2024.
She is also now a Connaught Telegraph Mayo Young Sports Stars winner, and the award will be presented to her on Friday at a gala ceremony in Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar. Tickets for the event can be obtained by contacting Aiden Henry on (087) 6582141 or aiden.henry@con-telegraph.ie.
